Revision: Newspaper industry

change in values - 1960s Mirror article "How to spot a homo"
considered to be acceptable in the 1960s - reflecting societal views of the time

Newspapers tend to reflect the societal views of the time in which they are written

the times - owned by newscorp - the sun, news of the world -- supports conservatives, major view of the time (supported labor in the 90s, as they were popular)

--

  • Who publishes the Mirror and who publishes The Times?
    The Mirror - Reach PLC
The Times - Newscorp, News UK

  • What else do these companies publish?
Reach PLC - Cambridgeshire Live (lots of local news), Daily Express
News UK - The Sun, The Sunday Times (News of the World)

  • What controversies have these companies been involved in?
Mirror - Libel cases (In May 2004, the Daily Mirror published what it claimed were photos of British soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners at an unspecified location in Iraq. The decision to publish the photos, subsequently shown to be hoaxes, led to Piers Morgan's sacking as editor of the paper on 14 May 2004.)
Times - Previous newspaper form the same publisher, News of The World involved in phone hacking scandal, The Times paying out for libel cases ("
The Murdoch press empire has actively supported xenophobic elements and undermined principles of open society and accountability") , Meghan Markle's breach of privacy

  • Find three examples of explicit political bias (eg how is The Mirror left wing and how is The Times right wing?)
The Mirror - critical of the current government (conservative) e.g Nazanin "should have been home six years ago",  Supportive of the NHS and Labour
The Times - Supportive of Conservatives and the current government, Critical of people such as Meghan Markle - "others"

  • Find three explicit examples of possible regulatory breaches
The Mirror - alleged daughter of Vladimir Putin - "Daughter" as they cannot state it outright, tiny puff piece on slavery compared to the huge article on Kate Middleton
The Times - "apology" to Meghan Markle for breach of privacy

  • In what ways are newspapers distributed, and what advantages do these different forms of distribution hold?
Digitally - can be accessed anywhere at anytime, and revenue can be gotten through ads and clickthrough
Physical - arguably nice to have a physical version you can hold

  • Find three explicit examples of how the regulation of online newspapers is particularly difficult and problematic
IPSO, newspaper regulators are funded by the newspapers themselves
can be argued that articles are of public interest, so belong to be in a newspaper

  • Research the current financial situations of the parent companies of both of these newspapers. How has this potentially shaped the output of these newspapers?
    The Mirror
    The Times

  • Explore alternatives to mainstream news sources. Find at least one explicit example
Huff Post - tabloid like left wing
Infowars - Far right conspiracy-like - presenters like Alex Jones are compelling and provides uses and gratifications to its audience, makes them feel a sense of community
