Les revenants uses stereotypes and the subversion of these stereotypes both positively and negatively to create deeper meaning within the show itself. For example, there are two different stereotypes of teenagers - through Camille and Lena. Camille is shown as being innocent, quiet and not usually noticed, while Lena is shown as being loud and rebellious. This can also be a stereotypical representation of their age as well, while they are twins Lena has since aged while Camille is dead and looks physically older. Camille's representation is soon subverted when she comes back as one of the "returned", as all of the attention of her family and the town is on her, making her feel out of place and an "other" in society. Camille is a stereotypical representation of a victim of a car accident, not heard about or known until after the accident has taken their lives. This negative view is sad and depressing, but the subversion of her stereotype and seeming like an "other" in society can be a representation of the Syrian refugee crisis. The show uses this metaphor to show that, despite maybe looking different, coming from different places, that we are not so different at all, like how the returned are just people, who have been through an unfortunate circumstance.
Lucy is similar representation of a victim, but instead is a victim of a serial killer. She is a stereotypical target for a killer, being a barmaid seen as somewhat sexual but also weak and subdued
