How does the advert for Breeze soap engage with it's target audience?
-direct address "because you're a woman"
-use of 'darling' is informal mode of address
-“To be sure you’re all over feminine” use breeze to be feminine and make you more of a woman
-The advert engages its audience through the mise en scene of hair and makeup-she is a hegemonically attractive women, this is enhanced by the decoration of the trendy hairstyle and sultry makeup on her face adding to the visual pleasure of the picture. This visual pleasure is catering to the male gaze as she is glamourized
-Use of ellipsis (...) to emphasise lexis; in particular "Because you're a woman"
-Telling the audience that they need this soap in order to be fresh and feminine.
-Soft words - "gentlest lather", "kindness" & "please" - clearly aiming for a female target audience.
((The producers of this advert would pay a premium to advertise in woman))
-the model is stereotypically attractive, very thin with curves and an hour glass figure, which engages with the target audience as they want to look like her

- constructing a gender binary
- constructs a simple and straightforward representation of women
-emphasises her figure
- trendy hairstyle
- sultry and sexual makeup
- appealing to the male gaze but the ad is targeted towards women.
- telling the audience you need to have this soap to be feminine
-The target audience is supposed to be women however the naked women appeals to the male gaze
This is a sexually explicit advert for 1964
"The purpose of an advert is to make the audience marginaly dissatisfied with his own life" - they dont look like the women in the magazine
mise en scene of the bath would get in the way of her naked body - not having it means more emphasis on her body
woman // vouge
vouge 9 shillings - today almost £8 - upper class, fancy, rich vs lower/middle class of womans mag
woman - filled with information and text
vogue - focus on the mise en scene of the model and the exclusion of text other than brand name and price
Vogue uses a lot more bold colours with connotations of confidence and wisdom whereas Woman magazine uses more pink tones which are stereotypical associated with women. -This suggests that Vogue is going against stereotypes regarding themes associated with women
vogue is iconic - high (end) fashion
- sophia loren
Vogue: Very unique selling point, maybe caused backlash as it looks like the turban on Sophia Loren could be classified as Cultural appropriation as the woman is white and the turban is classed as something that people from the South and Central Asia, north and west Africa would wear.
- 1965 less likely to offend people
woman vs sophia loren
- no diversity vs uniqueness, with bright colours
woman - british, straightforward
woman makeup looks natural, almost not there vs vogue more over the top and exaggerated
vogue printed on glossy paper, woman printed on lower quality
vogue - looks powerful, not a forced expression // forced scared smile for woman
woman - looks at you, almost nervous, informal friendly mode of address // vogue - judgemental
woman appealing to working class, vogue appealing to middle class
