ideological perspectives of newspapers and representation
newsworthiness - process of selective which stories to include in newspapers
-gatekeeper - trying to decide what is newsworthy
soft news - unimportant news - celeb gossip, etc not actually immediately affecting
hard news- important news, affects us as a society
"if it bleeds, it leads" eg how many people have died, are children, are british nationals
bias by-selection
intertextuality - where one media product refers to another media product
- where a media makes sense only through its reference to other media products
referrencial codes can be extremely vague
- picture at the top - haley from enders references a series : is a standalone story- assumes the TA is familiar with east enders - people who dont may assume it is a real person
- references to betting - two big betting splashes - TA working class, assumes they like gambling
- cheltenham festival - not just working class, a big posh event though marketed to people who have no choice?
- "may surrenders" - intertextual reference to war films/war - surrenders, defeat, chaos etc - dealings with brexit, deliberately small image showing she is not so big/powerful . not a particularly flattering image of her - bias through selection
- mayhem near picture - anchorage / also half pun on "mayhem"
- assumes prior knowledge of politics and horseracing
- "all the silks, all the tips, all the form" - prior knowledge needed of terms
- cheltenham glamourised, contrasts other subjects on the page - focus on the racing
ideology - system of ideals and beliefs but often used to describe ways in which those in power use their power to distort meaning - normalise the dominant ideas of the ruling class
left
- equality
- belief in the government regulation
- the power of the government
- collectivism
right
- hierarchy
- free market
- the rights of an individual
- individualism
