representation - show something again
- the ways in which a media product constructs the world and aspects in it, including social groups, individuals, issues and events
every media product is a lie (characters in friends are not real) - representation comes from beliefs in our society
representations are a reconstruction of reality - 100% constructed
how to write and talk about representation:
who or what is being represented? - stereotypical representation of a woman
how is the representation constructed through media language? - the colour red connotates femininity and love, hourglass figure is stereotypically beautiful
what ideology is presented about the represented group? - you cannot be attractive if you don't look like her
what is the societal impact of this message on the group being represented? - set expectations on what women are supposed to look like, dress and do
- What brands are being advertised? ultra beer, avocados from mexico, guitar hotel, genesis, coca cola
- Who is the target audience for the advert/product? everybody - a whole range of adverts and the audience to them are diverse
- What lifestyle is being sold to the target audience?
- John Berger argued that advertisements work by causing the audience to be dissatisfied with their everyday life. What 'problems' are these adverts solving? genesis - a classy, new car to replace their old one with, coca cola with an energy drink that can help you get ready for a party
- What groups of people are represented in each advert? Think age, nationality, ethnicity, weight, sexuality and so on - gay couple in afm, chinese man in guitar hotel
- What messages about these groups are constructed and re-presented to the target audience?
- In what ways might these representations reinforce and reconstruct reality for the target audience?
genesis - stereotypical representation of black people (unprofessional, loud) and white people also (more reserved, smarter?)
coca cola - jonah hill playing the average man (everyman) - not really fun, have to be greatly motivated to do something by a celebrity
white people represented as normal (hard rock hotel) - non white people represented as different, abnormal - different from one another, do different things in society?
