Task 2- Analysing a music video: Flaws - Bastille
Colour: Blue and grey colours are carried throughout the
first half of the video which reflects the setting of Coney Island coast which
was where it was filmed. Warmer tones show nearer the middle as the sun is setting,
which makes the video appear that it was filmed in one single day. The last
minute or so the sky is dark and the lights from the attractions illuminate the
area, showing the nearing of the end of the day, and the ending of the video.
Shot type: The video is presented in a lot of long shots and mid shots. The long
shots create the scene, showing the setting and the attractions within. The mid
shots bring more attention to the characters, focusing and them and what they
are doing (e.g looking at fish in a fish tank, focusing on the person singing) The
flip between these shots present the setting and the emotions the characters
are feeling.
Focus: The video is mainly in focus shots, bringing focus to the expressions from
the people in the video and the detail in the signs and buildings around them.
Framing: In a lot of the scenes, the general public of the area are included in
them, immersing the audience as it makes the video come to life, and seem more natural
rather than just the specific characters as centre points in the video. It seems
almost natural: even though the main characters are more unnatural, as they then
disappear at the end.
Mise-en-scene: The setting of the Coney Island coast reflects
the feeling of the song, which is upbeat and summery. This is contrasted by the
lyrics and characters, a man who is seemingly a ghost, rising from the dead for
a day, and a group of girls dressed as skeletons. The music in the video creates
a sense of euphoria, but the video showing that it must come to an end at some
point. This shows the audience that, perhaps, the small things in life, if short,
should be enjoyed.
